Ye Olde Raid Guide: Upper Blackrock Spire

Welcome to this first edition of “Ye olde raid guide”. This will be a series of posts covering everything you need to know to clear old raids at max level. We begin with the small but neat Upper Blackrock Spire.

Upper Blackrock Spire

While this raid doesn’t count for either Classic Raider or Guild Classic Raider achievements, it has it’s own achievement that you’ll earn for completing it. On top of that there’s a special achievement for reenacting the infamous Leeroy Jenkins video.

The quest Blackhand’s Command that leads into this raid is for Blackwing Lair attunement and is picked up by killing an Orc named Scarshield Quartermaster, located on the way up the stairs to Blackrock Spire. After defeating Warchief Rend Blackhand in Upper Blackrock Spire you can also just walk straight into Blackwing Lair via an instance portal.

This raid itself is very easy at the level cap and can be done by one person without any problems at all. But bringing friends is always fun, and even more fun is having your friends attuned to Blackwing Lair once it’s time to go there. šŸ™‚

Before you enter, make sure everyone who wants to get attuned for Blackwing Lair has the Blackhand’s Command quest that drops off an Orc named Scarshield Quartermaster outside the instance.

You enter via the Blackrock Spire instance portal (same one that leads to Lower Blackrock Spire). Once inside you go to the left into a hall that has many small chambers in it. You need to kill all the mobs inside each chamber to open the door to the next room.

Once all the mobs are dead you proceed through the newly opened door and travel upwards. In this room you need to click the Blackrock Altar to start a ritual that releases Pyroguard Emberseer. He will die in a second or two once the ritual is over.

The next room is the rookery, in here is where the whole Leeroy Jenkins-thing went down several years ago. You can earn the achievement Leeeeeeeeeeeeeroy! and the title “Jenkins” that goes with it by running in, aggroing 50 whelps and then AOEing them all down within 15 seconds. This used to be mildly challenging to solo at level 80 in green gear but now it’s a walk in the park for just about everyone.

Once you’ve killed enough whelps to satisfy your achievement-crazed hunger you proceed by going further upwards. There’ll be lots of trash on the way but eventually you end up in the arena where Warchief Rend Blackhand resides.

Warchief Rend Blackhand

Once inside the arena, an event starts. You’ll be attacked by waves of mobs for a few minutes until everything seems to stop. At this point you assume the event is bugged… but just wait, eventually Rend Blackhand will run through the caged area and come back out, mounted up on Glyth. At this point it is very, very important to not dps too quickly. Glyth has very little health and if you kill him too soon you will bug the encounter causing the event to never stop and the door behind you will never open. I recommend taking your weapon off and just punching Glyth in the face slowly until he reaches 20% health or so when Rend Blackhand jumps off. Once he’s off you can kill both of them as fast as you like.

The Beast

Once Rend Blackhand dies, the event will be over and the door behind you opens up. Keep going south until you get to a larger hall, here you can choose to go over to The Beast or go straight to General Drakkisath. The Beast is a large core hound that is desired by hunters due to it being tameable and has sexy looks. For everyone else, he’s not really all that interesting.

Hunters: He can fear you and knock you back, so be sure to bring haste cooldowns and possibly haste potions if you want to be able to tame him in time.

To get to General Drakkisath you just cross the bridge over to his hall. Be careful not to fall off, you’ll end up in Lower Blackrock Spire if you do. Drakkisath has no noteworthy abilities or considerations, just dps him down. Once dead, the people who are on the Blackhand’s Command quest can finish the quest by touching the orb behind him.

That’s it, you’ve cleared the instance, gained the achievements and have completed the Blackwing Lair attunement quest. Now you can access Blackwing Lair by using the orb outside Blackrock Spire. You can also move straight into Blackwing Lair from where you are now by moving back into the big hall and then go straight north. There you’ll find another instance portal that leads into Blackwing Lair.

Quick Raid Leading Notes

  • Make sure everyone has the attunement quest with them before entering.
  • Go left, clear the chambers in the room.
  • Leeroy achievement is easy and fun, no need to skip it.
  • Be very very careful in the arena so you don’t dps down Glyth too fast and bug the encounter. Just have one person melee it down without a weapon equipped.
  • Make sure everyone finishes the attunement quest by touching the orb after Drakkisath.
