Fun items with on-use abilities from Classic (Level 1-60)

This was originally written on 8th November, 2010. Before Cataclysm had arrived. I updated the guide on 18th of June, 2011 to be up to date with with the current expansion.

World of Warcraft is a very, very big game. There are over 70 000 items in the game right now. Most of these items are fairly average and uninteresting other than the fact that they make you more powerful with more stats and all that business. Those are not the items I want to bring up today. Instead, I want to focus on some unique items with cool on-use abilities.

Gordok Ogre Suit

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Disguise yourself as one of the Gordok ogres, and maybe even fool a particular captain in the process!Ā  The suit will only hold together for 10 min.
  • Item details: BoE, Consumable
  • Source: Quest, Crafted by Leatherworkers and Tailors
  • Notes: This item is unique and therefor you can only carry one at a time. If you want to stock them up you will have to use a guild bank or mail them back and forth between characters.
This item is not a trinket and has no internal cooldown, you can use it anytime and anywhere.

Stave of Fur and Claw

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Transforms you into a Furbolg for 3 min. (1 Hr Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Reputation reward
  • Source: Timbermaw Hold vendor
(requires Exalted reputation with Timbermaw Hold)
  • Notes: Before Cataclysm, Alliance characters could obtain a similar item by completing this quest. It rewarded you with Dartol’s Rod of Transformation that had the same on-use effect but with a much shorter cooldown (1 Min). This item is no longer available.

Orb of Deception

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Transforms caster to look like a member of the opposing faction. (30 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoE, Trinket
  • Source: Rare world drop from lvl 1-60 content, can usually be found on the Auction House for 1000-2000g
  • Notes: This transformation might fool your friends but it will not fool any member of the opposing faction in a PvP situation or NPCs.
The races you can transform into are predetermined by your own race:
    Gnome <-> Tauren
    Human <-> Orc
    Night Elf <-> Undead
    Dwarf <-> Troll
    Draenei <-> Blood Elf

Kalytha’s Haunted Locket

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Invite the spirit of Kalytha to overtake you. (15 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP
  • Source: Sold by Tex Vortacoil in Azshara for 5000 gold.
  • Notes:
    • This transforms you into a ghostly female night elf wearing some warlock-styled dress, mounting up will cause the mount to get spectral as well.
    • The buff that earns you the transformation lasts for an hour so you can keep it up indefinitely without it ever falling off.
    • There’s a similar item called Faded Wizard Hat which costs no gold but is a reward from a horde-only quest.

Savory Deviate Delight

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Transforms the person who eats this fish into a pirate or a ninja for 1 Hr.
  • Item details: BoE, Food
  • Source: Cooks can make this by using Deviate Fish, fished up from pools in Northern Barrens.
  • Notes: When eating the fish you consume it as well of course. So you need lots of them if you want to be able to transform often. Luckily though, there’s an endless supply in Northern Barrens.

Noggenfogger Elixir

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Transforms the person who drinks this into a skeleton for 30 min, or gain slow fall for 2 min or simply shrink for 30 min.
  • Item details: BoP, Drink
  • Source: Sold by Marin Noggenfogger in Tanaris.
  • Notes: Make sure you try /dance and /lie when you’re a skeleton. šŸ™‚

Piccolo of the Flaming Fire

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Causes nearby players to dance. (1 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Rare spawn mob in Stratholme
  • Notes: Yes, it actually does cause everyone around you to dance involuntarily – Unless they’re a member of the opposing faction. Awesome? Yes.

Vanquished Tentacle of C’Thun

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Summons a Vanquished Tentacle to your aid for 30 sec. (3 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: C’Thun, Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
  • Notes: Looks awesome, attacks awesomely, provides awesome innuendo jokes.
There’s a higher level equivalent found in Ulduar after beating Yogg-Saron without the aid of the keepers; Vanquished Clutches of Yogg-Saron.

Hook of the Master Angler

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Turns you into a fish, allowing you to breath underwater and increasing your swim speed.
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Reward from winning the Stranglethorn Vale fishing contest.
  • Notes: The on-use effect has no cooldown and the buff it gives you will remain for an unlimited amount of time as long as you stay underwater.

Defender of Timbermaw

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Calls forth a Timbermaw Ancestor to fight at your side and heal you. (10 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Quest
(requires Exalted reputation with Timbermaw Hold)
  • Notes: The furbolg that you summon to fight for you lasts for 30 seconds, with a 10 min cooldown on the trinket this little fella has a pretty short uptime. Nonetheless, he looks very cool!

Bloodsail Admiral’s Hat

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Right Click to summon a Blood Parrot to accompany you. The parrot will remain until sent away or you remove the hat.
  • Item details: BoP, Helm
  • Source: Quest that becomes available after achieving Avast Ye, Admiral!
  • Notes: Unlike many of the other summoned pets from on-use items, this one is just a companion and will not engage in combat. It will also prevent you from having another companion pet out at the same time.

Dog Whistle

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Summons a tracking hound that will protect you for 10 min. (10 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Houndmaster Loksey, Scarlet Monastery (Library)
  • Notes: Before Cataclysm this item only had three charges and would be consumed after the charges were up, but now you can use it how many times you like. Also, the dog model has changed, now it’s a neat little tracking hound and before it was actually a hyena.

Gus’ First Aid Kit

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Summons a Goblin nurse that will perform a physical. (2 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Quest
  • Notes: The goblin nurse will heal you three times during 30 seconds when he stays out after using the item. After that he despawns.
Due to the short cooldown on this item and the random things the nurse says, this item is actually one of the most cool and fun “summons an ally”-items there is. Don’t miss it!
(Now, if we only could get a level-appropriate Emergency Medical Hologram I’d never have to feign death again).

Book of the Dead

Barov Peasant Caller

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Calls forth 3 servants of the House Barov that will fight, cook, and clean for you. (10 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Quest
  • Obtainable in Cataclysm?: Unknown
  • Notes: The peasant’s that appear are different per faction and the races you get are random every time as well. There’s one downside to this neat trinket though; the effect only lasts about 10 seconds.

Cannonball Runner

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Summons a cannon that will fire at enemies in front of it that are attacking you. (5 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Willey Hopebreaker, Stratholme
  • Notes: Very neat looking effect but unfortunately only lasts for 10 seconds before it self-destructs (which looks kinda fun as well to be honest).

Shard of the Fallen Star

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Calls down a meteor, burning all enemies within the area for 400 to 442 total Fire damage. (3 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Trinket
  • Source: Random drop from mobs in Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
  • Notes: Allows you to summon a frikkin’ comet in someone’s face. What more do you want?

Six Demon Bag

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Blasts enemies in front of you with the power of wind, fire, all that kind of thing! (3 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoE, Trinket
  • Source: Rare world drop from lvl 1-60 content
  • Notes: Randomly uses one of these abilities: Frostbolt, Fireball, Chain lightning, Polymorph:Sheep, Whirlwind, Summon: Felhunter

Mechanical Yeti

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Summons a mechanical yeti that will protect you for 10 min. (10 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Consumable
  • Source: Quest
  • Notes: 3 charges, then he’s gone.
There’s a companion pet that looks just like this little guy, he won’t fight and die for you though; Tranquil Mechanical Yeti.

Circle of Flames

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Channels 75 health into mana every 1 sec for 10 sec. (5 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Helm
  • Source: Ambassador Flamelash, Blackrock Depths
  • Notes: The ability doesn’t sound too much fun until you look at that picture. Look at it, just look at it… So awesome.

Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: Channels a bolt of lightning and hurls it towards all enemies in front of the caster causing 147 to 167 Nature damage. The caster is then surrounded by a barrier of electricity for 10 min. (30 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Helm
  • Source: Mekgineer Thermaplugg, Gnomeregan
  • Notes: I almost missed this one, but then I saw that picture and I knew I had to include it!

Mark of the Dragon Lord

  • Wowhead link
  • On Use: A protective mana shield surrounds the caster absorbing 500 damage. While the shield holds, increases Spirit by 44 for 30 min. (30 Min Cooldown)
  • Item details: BoP, Ring
  • Source: Overlord Wyrmthalak, Blackrock Spire
  • Notes: The “shield” is shown by the graphic of a circling shadow orb. The interesting thing about this item is that the shadow orb will keep circling you until the shield falls off, which just won’t happen unless you enter combat and take damage.

Honorable mentions:

  • Cleansed Timberling Heart (Alliance Only) – Summons a level-appropriate Timberling to fight for you for 20 minutes. Consumed after one use.
  • Discombobulator Ray – Transforms the target into a Leper Gnome, reducing its melee damage and spell power by 40 and its movement rate by 20% for 12 sec. (1 Min Cooldown). Made by Engineers.
  • Dragon’s Call and Blackblade of Shahram – These are two swords that will summon a little whelp or flamewalker to aid you in combat when attacking something.
  • Horn of the Traitor– Commands the spirit of Cliffwatcher Longhorn to fight for you for 30 seconds. (5 Min Cooldown)

  • Rainbow Generator – Summons a Rainbow when used in combat (and only if used in combat)
  • Rhea’s Last Egg – Summons a whelpling that fights for you for 30 sec (10 Min cooldown)
  • River Boat – Summon your River Boat on the water’s surface within 20 yards. May only be used in Thousand Needles.
  • Tosselwrench’s Shrinker – Increases your critical rating by 42 and size for 20 sec. (10 Min Cooldown)
  • Toy Windmill – Summons a Windmill Lance that will fight for you for 30 sec (15 Min Cooldown)

Items of the past:

These items used to be in the list but have since the shattering of Azeroth (the arrival of Cataclysm) fallen through the cracks and are now, no longer obtainable. If you obtained these items before Cataclysm you still get to keep them though.

  • Linken’s Boomerang – Flings a magical boomerang towards target enemy dealing 113 to 187 damage and has a chance to stun or disarm them. (3 Min Cooldown)
It was an obvious tip-off-the-hat to the The Legend of Zelda-series. The quest that rewarded this item also rewarded Linken’s Sword of Mastery.
  • Smokey’s Lighter – Deals 125 Fire damage to all targets in a cone in front of the caster. (5 Min Cooldown).
  • Thunderbrew’s Boot Flask – Deals 50 Fire damage every 1 sec for 5 sec to all enemies in front of you. Gets you quite drunk too! (30 Min Cooldown).
  • Spectral Essence – Allows you to see ghosts on the island of Caer Darrow in Western Plaguelands (Still obtainable if you have completed this quest before Cataclysm).
  • Skull of Impending Doom – 60% run speed boost for 10 sec and you take 60% health damage.
  • Nifty Stopwatch – 40% run speed boost for 10 sec.

Got any more items you think would fit on this list? Let me know by leaving a comment!

Wow, that’s some list! I even found a couple of things I might get myself, eventhough I don’t usually collect stuff (but hey, I have to get my own Tentacle). Nice work šŸ™‚

  2. Ophelie says:

Awesome list. In my obsession for cool collectibles, I actually own quite a few of those.

Never seen the tentacles before though. Very cool!

  3. diablo343 says:

I still use my Piccolo a lot. It’s one of my favorite trinkets.

Yeah, I’m planning on making posts for similar items in the other expansions as well. I love these items too and I want a more definitive list that I can go back and look at when I feel the need to go out and collect something. šŸ™‚

  5. Great list! Now I have more daily locations to visit while waiting for Cataclysm.
