Bane of the Fallen King

Tonight has been an awesome night! The last week or so we’ve finally started to work on the heroic difficulty of Lich King 10-man in a more serious manner. We’ve put in some random attempts in on it here and there during the last months but something else always came in between and as such we just hadn’t gotten it done. For comparison, we did Sindragosa 10-man heroic for the first time on 2010/05/24, after that it was all-out 25-man. And we managed to get pretty far with that by the way, currently sitting at 10/12 done in 25-man heroic mode.

But like I said, the last week we’ve been putting in a few nights of good attempts and tonight was the night where he finally fell to his bane. We started out with two great attempts with the second one getting us as far as 14% but we had a few dead by then and we got too close to the enrage timer and Lich King pimp-slapped us all. After that, what happens? Oh it’s the standard thing isn’t it… several disconnections in a row, lag-spikes, unlucky defile in the worst possible spot, etc. But then, after countless wipes, everything suddenly aligns perfectly and we get to phase 3 again, this time with everyone alive.
We slowly and methodically carry out the tactics to the letter and manage to keep everyone alive and.. finally… he hits 10% and boom!

At this point vent goes nuts, but I can’t hear anything due to the incredibly loud wind rushing sound effect that kicks in in the 2nd phase transition. It’s a bug that kicks in sometimes randomly in cities but in this fight it appeared like clockwork everytime in the start of the 2nd phase transition and never leaves. This bug made me and half the raid totally unable to hear anything in the game or on vent during the entire last phase. Raiding without voice communication? Pro-ness.

Deviations from the standard strategy

You can see the standard tactic for defeating Lich King 10-man heroic difficulty on tankspot.

We went with three healers rather than the recommended two. We tried with two several times and it seemed viable but there was absolutely no room for error or bad luck and we did have a bit too much dps, so why not go with three healers?

Rather than using a hunter for tranquilizing the enraged adds we had a moonkin do it. They are the best class at handling it nowadays with their new Soothe which is cheap and instant cast.

That was it really, everything else was as expected. Including the awesome skillful moves by everyone involved! πŸ™‚

Bucket list

I got inspired by riotxjess from Tales of a Noob to write my own bucket list of what I wanted to do before Cataclysm:

There are some other achievements that I’d like to do but I just don’t think there will be a window of opportunity to actually do them within the next month. Achievements such as Conquerer of Ulduar, A Tribute to Dedicated Insanity and of course; The Light of Dawn.

How about you guys, what are your goals before Cataclysm and do you think you’ll be able to achieve them in time?

Cheers,
Gav

Congrats on the kill πŸ™‚ I’m hoping that within the next few months my guild can accomplish the same!

It’s a pretty intense encounter where there’s a lot of abilities which will just wipe you if you do one misstep, sorta like Sindragosa heroic. But I’m sure you can do it, all it takes is practice!

Sadly we’re 11/12 ICC10H but have had so many people “vacation” from the game lately that it’s just the guild leader, an spriest/holy priest, and myself (UH DK) left. So close, yet so far! 😦

We’re thinking of transferring but haven’t found anywhere to go and sadly, it seems not many guilds are recruiting a main tank, a DPS DK, and an spriest/hpriest. Doubly so, we’re Horde atm but have considered transferring to Alliance. Alas, same problem – not many guilds recruiting AND willing to roll into ICC10 H.

And to think, we got this far only to be hamstringed right at the finish line.

Congratulations on your kill! πŸ™‚ I hope we’re able to share in the same sense of accomplishment.

I think you’ll find that it’s very difficult to find any guild that is actually trying to raid anything on a serious level at the moment.

On my realm (which has a low population) there’s almost no proper raiding going on at all, it’s mostly just achievement runs to older raids and maybe some alty ICC runs that don’t get very far.

If you’re looking for a new realm to call home I’d suggest looking for a high population realm because there you’d have a higher chance of finding people that actually still want to raid. Unlike mine (QQ). πŸ™‚

I wish you the best in luck in your search and remember, the encounter will still be here in Cataclysm and can be done then. It might not feel as “epic” but you’ll still get to see all the details of the encounter and most of the abilities will probably still one-hit you so it shouldn’t be a walk in the park even at lvl 85!

      Cheers,
      Gav
