Hunter Soloing: The Mount Runs

We are hunters, we bring the win to many dungeons and raids. The other classes needs to use groups because they don’t have us and since us hunters are fantastically kind people we do help these poor groups. However, sometimes we like to raid as we were intended to, just us and our pet. It’s time for the Rapid Fire guide to The Mount Runs!

This is not intended to be a guide to each specific instance and encounter. This is intended to be a great big list referencing all the guides and resources you could possibly need to achieve your goals. What goals? Grabbing every single rare-drop mount available to us in the game while soloing content.

Mounts you can’t get through soloing

Classic (lvl 1-60)

Temple of Ahn’Qiraj

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 60, 40-man raid, located in Silithus
  • Lockout: Once per week
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Mounts: Blue, Yellow, Green, Red Qiraji Battle Tanks
  • Dropped by: Trash
  • Drop rate: Blue/Yellow/Green have a 15% drop rate (about 1 in 7), Red has 1% drop rate (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: Why? Because it’s Red
  • Guides: Ahn’Qiraj Hunter Solo Mount Guide by TribalXHunter (WotLK)
  • Notes: These four mounts all drop from trash in Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. It’s possible to get all of these mounts from the first round of trash packs before the first boss by doing a soft-reset after each clear (thus avoiding the lockout). Killing the first boss shouldn’t be too difficult though and if you do that you have a butt-load more trash that you can kill, keep in mind you can’t do a soft reset if you do this.

Also noteworthy is that none of these mounts can be used outside the actual instance, they do count towards all mount achievements however.

Stratholme – Undead side

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 42-56, 5-man dungeon, located in Eastern Plaguelands
  • Lockout: Five per hour
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Mount: Rivendare’s Deathcharger
  • Dropped by: Lord Aurius Rivendare
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: Deathcharger’s Reins
  • Guides: Stratholme Mount Run Guide by TribalXHunter (WotLK)
  • Notes: Make sure you get in through the right entrance. This instance is split up into two these days and the entrance you want is known as the “Service Entrance”.

This mount drops from the last boss in the instance and to get to him you need to clear the mobs in each of the three Ziggurats located behind the three bosses. Once you figured out what a Ziggurat is, farming this place for the mount becomes very easy.

Burning Crusade (lvl 61-70)

Sethekk Halls (heroic)

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 70, 5-man dungeon, located in Terokkar Forest
  • Lockout: Once per day
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Mount: Raven Lord
  • Dropped by: Anzu
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: Reins of the Raven Lord
  • Guides: Farming Anzu by Outdps,
Anzu, The Raven God by Rapid Fire
  • Notes: This mount drops from the second to last boss in the instance which used to only be summon-able by druids who had completed a long and arduous quest chain. Nowadays it’s available to anyone who enter the dungeon on heroic difficulty. To gain access to heroic difficulty you need to have the Auchenai Key.

It’s possible to reach the boss without defeating any mobs by using Camouflage, Speed boosts, Deterrence and Feign Death. I recommend doing this rather than clearing the place since you’ll save a lot of time that way. Be careful with the guards that stand on each side of pathways, they can still kill you in a few hits.

The boss itself is very easy.

Magister’s Terrace (heroic)

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 70, 5-man dungeon, Located on Isle of Quel’danas
  • Lockout: Once per day
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Mount: Swift White Hawkstrider
  • Dropped by: Kael’Thas Sunstrider
  • Drop rate: 4% (1 in 25)
  • Related achievements: Swift White Hawkstrider
  • Guides: Magisters’ Terrace Hc Hunter solo (WotLK)
  • Notes: To get access to the heroic version of the dungeon you need to clear the place on normal difficulty first while doing the quest chain that begins with the Crisis at the Sunwell quest.

Clearing the place is easy as a hunter with a tenacity pet but you outlevel the mob enough to just walk past them, with or without Camouflage. You have to kill all the bosses however. The mount itself drops from the last boss, which also has a chance of dropping a companion pet.

Karazhan

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 70, 10-man raid, located in Deadwind Pass
  • Lockout: Once per week
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Mount: Fiery Warhorse
  • Dropped by: Attumen the Huntsman
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: Fiery Warhorse’s Reins
  • Guides: Hunter Solos Attumen the Huntsman by WHU (WotLK)
  • Notes: Previously, to get access to Karazhan you had to get the key by doing a very long and very terrible quest chain. But because of the keyaclysm you can now simply walk in.

Attumen the Huntsman is the first boss on the left. There’s a minimal amount of trash in front of him and it’s recommended you clear it or it’ll aggro to you when you start working on the boss.

Tempest Keep

Wrath of the Lich King (lvl 71-80)

Utgarde Pinnacle (heroic)

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 80, 5-man dungeon, located in Howling Fjord
  • Lockout: Once per day
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Mount: Blue Proto-Drake
  • Dropped by: Skadi the Ruthless
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: None
  • Guides: Utgarde Pinnacle Heroic: Soloing Skadi by Lumiya
  • Notes: You can Camouflage past all the trash and prior bosses and go straight to Skadi. Once there it’s just a matter of misdirecting all the adds to your pet, picking up three harpoons and firing them onto the boss and then slowly killing the boss.
    Beware of the whirlwind. :)

Culling of Stratholme (heroic)

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 80, 5-man dungeon, located in Caverns of Time
  • Lockout: Once per day
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Bronze Drake
  • Dropped by: Infinite Corruptor
  • Drop rate: 100% (1 in 1)
  • Related achievements: The Culling of Time
  • Guides: N/A
  • Notes: To get this mount you need to clear up to the second to last boss and killing it in 25 minutes. This was very easy with a full group back in the day of Wrath of the Lich King but might be slightly tricky now when you go in there on your own. It has been confirmed to be easily doable with two people, so it might very well be possible to solo as a hunter.

Vault of Archavon

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 80, 10/25-man raid, located in Wintergrasp
  • Lockout: Once per week
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Grand Black War Mammoth
  • Dropped by: Bosses
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: Grand Black War Mammoth
  • Guides:
  • Notes: To gain access to Vault of Archavon, your faction needs to control Wintergrasp. What? You forgot about Wintergrasp? The battle is still on! Sign up and fight the good fight today!

There is no advantage to entering the 25-man version instead of the 10-man version, the drop rate is equal in both versions. So, do yourself a favor and enter the 10-man version. Soloing Archavon is relatively easy with a tenacity pet and some soloing preparation. Read the guide linked above for more information.

Soloing the other bosses was rather difficult in the beginning of Cataclysm, but over the course of the expansion we have become quite a bit more powerful with our new gear, so nowadays you can actually clear the whole instance with relative ease (except for Toravon which will probably prove a bit challenging).

Eye of Eternity

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 80, 10/25 man raid, located in Borean Tundra
  • Lockout: Once per week
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Blue Drake in 10-man and Azure Drake in 25-man
  • Dropped by: Malygos
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: None
  • Guides: Malygos Battle
  • Notes: I originally believed that this wasn’t soloable but I was proven wrong. Check out the video and watch closely what this hunter does.

One of the more important things I noticed was that your pet despawns during the time where Malygos picks you up and spins stuff around and then comes out again with like 5k health when you get dropped off to the ground, so be careful there.

Onyxia’s Lair

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 80, 10/25 man raid, located in Dustwallow Marsh
  • Lockout: Once per week
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Onyxian Drake
  • Dropped by: Onyxia
  • Drop rate: 0.1% (1 in 1000)
  • Related achievements: None
  • Guides: 85 hunter soloing onyxia10 by Bibiie
  • Notes: If you’re looking for a serious soloing challenge then this is it. Check the video above and be amazed.

Cataclysm (lvl 81-85)

The Stonecore

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 81, 5-man dungeon, located in Deepholm
  • Lockout: Five per hour
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Vitreous Stone Drake
  • Dropped by: Slabhide
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: None
  • Guides: Soloing Slabhide by Outdps
  • Notes: Most people assume you need to do this boss on heroic mode to see this mount drop, this is not true. Enter the dungeon on normal mode and clear the trash packs up to the first boss. Once Corborus bursts through the wall you’ll be able to walk over to Slabhide (you don’t actually need to kill Corborus).

The Vortex Pinnacle

  • Wowpedia link
  • Instance details: Level 81, 5-man dungeon, located in Uldum
  • Lockout: Five per hour
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Mount: Drake of the North Wind
  • Dropped by: Altairus
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Related achievements: None
  • Guides: Hunter Soloing: Altairus by Rapid Fire
  • Notes: Just like the one from Stonecore, this mount can be grabbed in normal mode as well as heroic mode. So why get a party and go for heroic when you can solo it? Read the guide above for detailed instructions on how to defeat this boss.

Instances/encounters you can’t solo

These raids and/or achievements you will probably find impossible to solo but I decided to list them anyway for completion. Some of these we might be able to solo eventually and others will remain impossible indefinitely due to the mechanics of the encounters.

Obsidian Sanctum

  • Sartharion drops Black Drake on 10-man and Twilight Drake on 25-man, both on hard mode (engaging the boss with all three of the small drakes still alive)
  • Drop rate: 100% (1 in 1)
  • Not doable because: While someone has already soloed Sartharion 10-man mode as a hunter, it seems very unlikely that you’d be able to solo the hard mode since normal mode is already such a close call. This might be soloable sometime in the future though.

Ulduar

  • Yogg-Saron drops Mimiron’s Head on 25-man hardmode (not using the help of any of the four keepers)
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Not doable because: You will suffer a horrible tentacle-death if you ever attempt this.

Phase 1 will be tricky to do from a pet positioning perspective and you will most likely die from the random dots but let’s ignore that for a bit. If you managed to get into phase 2 you would be up against tentacles spawning in random locations around the boss while being debuffed by each one of them (slowing you down, mind controlling you and dealing damage to you). If you by some miracle managed to destroy all of these tentacles in time (and survive) before the portals opened I imagine you’d suffer a terrible death inside from the AOE damage.

Not to mention your sanity would drop down very quickly due to all debuffs only hitting you and on hard mode without Freya’s help there’s no way to regain that sanity.

Icecrown Citadel

  • The Lich King drops Invincible on 25-man heroic mode
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Not doable because: First off, you have to clear all of Icecrown Citadel 25-man mode to get to him (and all wing bosses on heroic). And then even if you do some super awesome haxing and did get to him, you could not survive Infest unless you had over 200k hp and you would have no chance of defeating him before the enrage timer hit. Not to mention you being the only target of Val’kyrs… etc.

Throne of the Four Winds

  • Al’akir drops Drake of the South Wind
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100)
  • Not doable because: It’s level 85 raid content.
We can speculate that it could be soloable in the next expansion. But I’m thinking all of the AOE damage in this encounter will kick your ass even at level 90 with full tier 15 gear.

Firelands

  • Alysrazor drops Flametalon of Alysrazor
  • Ragnaros drops Pureblood Fire Hawk
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100) on both
  • Not doable because: It’s level 85 raid content. My guess is that both of these will remain unsoloable in Mists of Pandaria.

Alysrazor demands two tanks to handle the special adds, tanking and killing these is only possible because of the special buff you get. Does this buff work on pets? And if so, can you take two of them? Will be interesting to see.

Ragnaros soloing just sounds flat-out impossible to me with all the random things going on in that encounter. What about the adds spawning on either side of the room, neither of them being able to reach the hammer or you wipe?

Dragon Soul

  • Ultraxion drops Experiment 12-B
  • Deathwing drops Blazing Drake
  • Drop rate: 1% (1 in 100) on both
  • Not doable because: It’s level 85 raid content. I’m guessing these will also be tricky nigh impossible in Mists of Pandaria. Since you have to have one in the regular phase at all time on Ultraxion, it won’t be possible to use the button to soak the Twilight blast. So you’d have to survive each blast on your own, somehow.

Deathwing doesn’t seem technically impossible to me, just cumbersome. This one will depend on numbers more than anything else.

Cheers,
Gav

I believe that the occ and eoe drakes were changed to scale with gear as part of one Blizzard’s attempts to make the drakes more appealing. I don’t know what the scaling is, though, and so have no idea how Cata stats affect the drakes.

    • Gavendo says:

Gonna have to check that out then. :)

    • ed says:

On the Stratholme run, what does it mean when you say the lockout is 5 per hour. Does that mean you can run it 5 times in an hour every hour? Theoretically then 5×24 = 120 runs in a 24 hour period?
      thanks
      Ed

      • Gavendo says:

Basically, yes. But the number keeps stacking up starting from the first instance entered and will drop that first number after an hour. Not necessarily on the hour.

There’s an addon to keep track of this called InstanceLockOut, check it out. :)

        Cheers,
        Gav

  2. Aeliel says:

If you don’t have the Karazhan key, you can also just die right in front of the locked gate and resurrect beyond it. Much easier now that we have Azeroth flight, since you can just fly directly up, dismount and splat rather than pull a bunch of the ghosts and wait for them to slowly whittle down your health.

Nice list! I’ve been slacking on my boss-killing-for-mounts (haven’t even bothered going to Karazhan, which for me as a tank druid is the easiest of the lot); this is a good reminder.

  3. Aeliel says:

Looks like a hunter soloing Kael’thas in the Eye is actually possible. Seems he can LoS the mind control – take a look at the two videos linked in this thread: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2016792902

  4. Gavendo says:

Oh yeah, I forgot about that trick. Thanks for the reminder. :)

    That Kael’Thas soloing looks crazy… :o

  5. Very nice guide :) I solo ZA/MC/BWL (first boss needs a helper tho) for gold and fun every week. I also do kara but I hate the randomness at chess event.
Za – mojo pet, 500gold, takes 20 mins.
    MC-600gold+ingot chance(500gold)
    BWL – 1.2k gold+ 4-6 elementium (3-400ea)

not to mention the amount of flex gear dropping there.

  6. Violattor says:

I could be wrong but Rivendare’s mount has always been listed as a 0.10% drop rate not 1%. I lost count years ago but I estimate that I have run this dung 300+ times easily if not more and have never seen the mount drop.

    • Gavendo says:

It was originally 1 in 5000 back when the content was current but they changed it to 1 in 100 during BC (or maybe it was WotLK?), either way, it’s 1 in 100 now.

And yes even though it’s 1 in 100 drop chance you can go in there far more than 100 times without actually seeing it. It’s probability not certainty. :)

      Cheers,
      Gav

For Sethekk halls I would recommend just clear the whole instance. Skipping everything would make sense if you could run this instance multiple times a day, but since you can only run this instance once per day, I clear and loot everything to earn some extra coin.

Hey I love your guides, just to confirm that you can solo culling of strath for the mount. I used BM with a spirit beast pet to give me some self heals. The rest was fairly standard misdirect & multi shot on the mobs, and nuke en bosses.

  13. Jazzism says:

Great writeup. I like to update that azure drake and blue drake have a chance to drop from Malygos 10 and 25.

You forgot about ZG and ZA mounts, also pretty easy to solo
