Pet bugs

4.1

Hunters are able to provide many buffs and debuffs with our pets, some even say that we’re Shamans with movable vicious totems which in some ways is true. And while all the buffs provided by all pets are working fine, some of the debuffs are currently not working fine at all. This post to help inform you and your raid leader of what pet debuffs are actually viable for a hunter to bring (again; all the buffs are still fine).

Updates since 4.1:

  • Hyenas debuff isn’t resisted by mobs and/or bosses in dungeons and raids anymore, you still have to use a macro to re-apply the debuff to prevent it from falling off though.
  • The status of the Carrion Bird and Sporebat is unchanged.
  • Almost all of the debuffs are still falling off before being reapplied.

Seriously bugged pets

The pets below are bugged to the point that they are basically unusable as a debuff-provider. Do not bring any of these pets to a raid and inform your raid leader of them being bugged.

  • Carrion Bird (ferocity) – Reduces the target’s physical damage caused by 10%
    • Demoralizing Screech lasts for 10 sec instead of 15 sec like Demoralizing Roar and the cooldown is 10 sec. This causes the debuff to always fall off before being reapplied.
  • Sporebat (cunning) – Reduces the target’s cast speed by 30%
    • The Spore Cloud debuff behaves oddly. It doesn’t display a timer when it’s applied on a target and just looks like some kind of debuff aura. It does however disappear after ~10 seconds as the tooltip indicates. The cooldown on the ability is 8 seconds and even though the pet tries to reapply the debuff before it falls off, it doesn’t seem to get reapplied before it actually falls off.

The Carrion Bird debuff can be provided by all tank speccs and since you can count on at least having one tank in every dungeon or raid group you shouldn’t worry about ever bringing this pet anyway. Same goes for the Sporebat debuff which can be brought by any specc of Death Knight, Rogues, Warlocks or Arcane Mages.

However the bleed debuff provided by the Hyena is very rare and totally awesome for Marksman and therefor that one being bugged is particularly annoying.

Pets with bugs that can be circumvented

These pets all suffer from the same bug. These pets cannot reapply their debuffs themselves until the debuffs has actually worn off, causing downtime. However, if you manually reapply the debuff there is no problem. It’s just that the pets can’t do it themselves. You can bypass this inconvenience of reapplying the debuff yourself by simply macroing the abilities to your often spammed ability Steady Shot or Cobra Shot.

  • Bear (tenacity) – Reduces the target’s physical damage caused by 10%
  • Hyena (ferocity), Boar (tenacity) or Rhino (tenacity, exotic) – Increases the target’s bleed damage taken by 30%
  • Core Hound (ferocity, exotic) – Reduces the target’s cast speed by 30%
  • Devilsaur (ferocity, exotic) – Reduces the effectiveness of heals on target by 10%
  • Dragonhawk (cunning) or Wind Serpent (cunning) – Increases the target’s magic damage taken by 8%
  • Ravager (cunning) or Worm (tenacity, exotic) – Increases target’s physical damage taken by 4%

Your regular Cobra Shot macro probably looks like this:

#showtooltip Cobra Shot
/startattack
/cast Cobra Shot

Replace that macro with this:

#showtooltip Cobra Shot
/startattack
/cast Cobra Shot
/cast Tendon Rip
/cast Ravage
/cast Fire Breath
/cast Monstrous Bite
/cast Lava Breath
/cast Gore
/cast Lightning Breath
/cast Acid Spit
/cast Demoralizing Roar
/cast Stampede

/cast Spore Cloud” and “/cast Demoralizing Screech” is missing from this macro due to space constraints. Don’t worry though since both these debuffs are from the bugged pets above that you are very unlikely to want to bring anyway. On top of that their debuffs are generally always covered by others.

If you’re Marksman, just replace Cobra Shot with Steady Shot of course:

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/startattack
/cast Steady Shot
/cast Tendon Rip
/cast Ravage
/cast Fire Breath
/cast Monstrous Bite
/cast Lava Breath
/cast Gore
/cast Lightning Breath
/cast Acid Spit
/cast Demoralizing Roar
/cast Stampede

/cast Spore Cloud” and “/cast Demoralizing Screech” is missing from this macro due to space constraints. Don’t worry though since both these debuffs are from the bugged pets above that you are very unlikely to want to bring anyway. On top of that their debuffs are generally always covered by others.

This macro will force the debuffs listed above to be manually reapplied every time you cast Cobra Shot or Steady Shot which means the debuff will never fall off. The downside of doing this is that it will spam the ability on your pet which might make it produce a lot of noise which will make your melee annoyed (try it with a Hyena and witness the melee go insane).

There could also be other side effects that we’re just not aware of such as the debuff sharing global cooldown with other abilities and thus less of those are being cast? Either way, keeping the debuffs up should be priority number one and this, for now, is the only way for us to have that happen.

Pets that work absolutely fine

Just for good measure, I’ve included the pets with debuffs that are actually working perfectly fine. You might be surprised to see the Raptor here since it has been bugged for several months, well rejoice, it is working fine now. :)

  • Raptor (ferocity) or Serpent (cunning) – Reduces the target’s armor by 12%.
  • Fox (ferocity) or Tallstrider (ferocity) – Reduces the target’s melee and ranged attack speed by 20%

General Pet bugs

Apart from the bugs with our pet’s debuffs, we also have some other annoying bugs to deal with.

  • Pets coming out with very low health (about 4-6k) and staying there for roughly 5 seconds after getting summoned. This is due to health needing to be recalculated once a pet has been summoned. But with the original health at such a low value pets tend to get one-shotted just after dismounting when questing or doing battlegrounds. Very annoying.

Gav

Hm… I did not notice that Ravager was bugged. I stopped using my ravager just a bit ago though. Did you test these findings on the target dummy?

  2. Gavendo says:

Yeah, it’s been tested on target dummies and most of these have been tested in raids as well (which does make a difference in some cases, like you can see with the Hyena).

  3. Mabon says:

Why would you use /startattack in your macro? Doesn’t /cobra shot turn on your auto attack? Just seem complicated to add extra lines that are not needed into the macro.

    • Gavendo says:

If you attack something by pressing your cobra/steady shot button first then your first auto shot on that target will be delayed until after that first cobra/steady shot has finished it’s cast. A delayed auto shot is a dps loss.
Adding the /startattack line to a macro before the cobra/steady shot bit will prevent this from happening.

It might seem insignificant, but it’s something you can easily do once and then not think about it and then have a definite dps gain from it.

      Cheers,
      Gav

Any updates on these bugs from the PTR builds?

    • Gavendo says:

I’ve seen a report that the Ravager and the Sporebat should be working fine on the PTR. I have not heard anything about the other pets yet… but I think the PTR is over soon, so sometime soon I shall have an updated list for you. :)
