Ghostcrawler bringeth thy class balance destruction upon thee. No, not really. He writes about all the changes they want to make to class balance and to be honest, it all looks pretty perfect. Keep in mind that the suggested changes will not come into effect anytime soon with hotfixes, these are goals that you might see corrected in the next patch.
I’ve cut out all the non-hunter stuff and pasted the interesting stuff here. If you wanna read the full post then check the official WoW blog.
We’re happy with damage overall. We have very few traditional tank and spank fights (even Argaloth likes to parry melee) so it’s hard to get consistent numbers without very large data sets. Still, we see Survival hunters and Unholy DKs on top of a lot of single target fights. Arcane, Marksman, and Beastmaster damage is too low. [...] On fights where there is a lot of area damage, Demonology warlocks, Frost DKs and possibly Survival hunters are all too high.
We’ll make a pass to make stats that aren’t attractive (but are supposed to be) more attractive. [...] We are considering making some physical attacks such as [...] Steady Shot [...] scale with haste.
Mastery is a new stat for us, and there are a few specs that don’t value it enough. In some cases (e.g. Combat rogues), the design for mastery is fine and we just need to buff the effects to make it more desirable. In others, we don’t think it’s possible to buff mastery enough in its current form.
As part of the Marks and Beastmaster buffs, we’re buffing Aimed Shot, Kill Shot, Chimera Shot, and Kill Command.
First of all, we knew Survival was a bit too high (it’s crazy high) and it was written about here and on WHU. So a nerf to Survival dps is not shocking or unwelcome in anyway. Let’s just hope they don’t overdo it.
More importantly, Ghostcrawler acknowledges that Marksman and Beastmastery is too low and needs to be buffed. And how will they buff them? By buffing all the signature shots which have felt a bit weak and on top of that buffing Kill Shot and making haste more valuable for us. There’s also a hint that we might see some more tweaking with the way Mastery works for us, but nothing confirmed there.
This isn’t something I was expecting myself, I thought Marksman and Beastmastery would be left in the dust and Survival would be the one and only dps spec in Cataclysm. I’m glad to see that I am wrong. Hooray for Ghostcrawler, the lightbringer!
Interesting sidenote; apparently we weren’t supposed to see this blog post just yet (Source):
Hey, you weren’t supposed to see that yet. Someone caught a website bug!
Dec 22 – 27 hotfixes
Just before Ghostcrawler posted his long epos of class balance there was another batch of hotfixes listed and here are the ones that caught my eye:
- The Unearthing Uldum quest achievement can now be obtained after completing 105 quests in Uldum, down from 108.
- Players are now granted 250 Ramkahen reputation after completing the daily quest “Fire From the Sky”.
- Winning as an attacker now rewards players with 1800 Honor Points, up from 180. Winning as a defender still rewards players with 180 Honor Points.
- Vashj’ir archaeological dig sites no longer unlock for players. They felt too punishing without additional benefits compared to low-level sites, and were much more difficult to obtain artifacts in due to the way Vashj’ir navigation works.
- Stormwind Lobster Traps now respawn more quickly and can be gathered across all Stormwind quest phases.
Now there are two dailies in Uldum which rewards Ramkahen reputation:
For a grand total of 400 reputation per day. So if you were to completely avoid using their tabard and had done all their quests to bring you up to 3.2k/12k into Honored, it would take you 85 days to get to fully exalted. Wicked.
