Last night I was able to cross off yet another item on my personal bucket list. Even though it’s not as current as Bane of the Fallen King or Halion heroic, I found this one to be the most personally rewarding for me.
The road to nowhere
It was nine months ago that some friends from the guild and I started to work on obtaining our special Herald of the Titans gear and we went into Ulduar on a weekly basis for many months to gear people up and eventually to start getting some proper attempts in on Algalon with the right gear. Our progress steady for awhile but got slowed down more and more by most time being spent in Icecrown Citadel and eventually some of the people who had geared up stopped playing the game or transferred, etc.
By the summer the Herald of the Titans group had come to a complete halt, there was no more gearing up and there were no more attempts being done because we just didn’t have enough people to do it.
Luckily for us, another guild on the realm had the exact same situation. They had been gearing up for a long time but now were a bit short on people. But it would take more than that to get things moving… One person from a third guild had geared two characters to get this achievement. His main and a tanking alt to help others, since there always seemed to be a lack of tanks. This guy pulled together the efforts from our separate guilds and put it into one big glorious joined-effort group that had members of several different guilds on our realm.
The joining of several guilds into this one group for this effort has created a very nice little community amongst us veteran achievement hunters on my realm. We hang out more and we help each other out in Naxxramas, Ulduar and whatever else we might be up to for fun these days. Needless to say, it’s been nothing but awesomeness.
Legends in our time
The group has now completed the achievement at least three times (possibly more, I haven’t been there every week) and managed to get the title to most of the people who originally signed up for it and are still around. I was lucky enough to be in the group for last night who did manage to complete it with just one minute remaining before Algalon would disappear.
Our first attempt was very close. We got him down to 500k – which is seconds away from victory – when he hit the enrage timer and big banged us into oblivion (we had several people dead already). After that we had several attempts where one or two minor details went wrong which caused us to wipe. Eventually we got to our last attempt and miraculously we all managed to get it together and focus our way into the last phase. With just one minute left before Algalon would beam up and send out his distress call, we managed to defeat him!
Interestingly, for our last attempt we had one of our dpsers disconnect right at the start and then die to something random before he could log back in, which means we actually 9-manned Algalon in our Herald of the Titans gear. GG? :)
Best boss ever
For me this was one of the most epic and memorable moments I’ve ever experienced in World of Warcraft. Ever since we did our first attempts on Algalon in 10-man mode with our (at the time) new and shiny 245 gear I have felt that this boss is the most awesome thing to ever have been implemented in the game and I still feel that today. It’s more epic than downing Lich King on heroic mode, it’s more epic than downing Halion on heroic mode, it’s more epic than defeating all the horde cities and earning the “For the Alliance” achievement, it’s more epic than “Earth, Wind and Fire” and it’s even more epic than obtaining “Insane in the Membrane“.
To get to Algalon you have to complete a quest to obtain the Celestial Planetarium Key, this is done by defeating all the keepers in Ulduar on hard mode. This in it self will be difficult still to this day, if you’re not sure what you’re doing. Especially Mimiron will just laugh at you and wipe you unless you’re sufficiently prepared for the encounter. Once you’ve gotten the key you gain access to Algalon’s room and once you enter it and disturb him, you’ll only get one hour to defeat him. If you pay attention to what Algalon is saying you will notice that he’s there by service of the titans, to re-originate the entire planet of Azeroth. If yo do not defeat him within one hour, Algalon will wipe out all the life on Azeroth!
… and to top it off, I actually earned my 10 000th achievement point with the Herald of the Titans achievement. I seriously doubt anything in this game could ever top this, it’s all downhill from here! I’d loved to be proven wrong though and Cataclysm is right around the corner. I’m eagerly awaiting new epic moments!
You can find the standard strategy which we based our approach on on Tankspot.
We used three healers; one Disc. priest, one Holy paladin and the third could be any of the remaining options (we had a shaman for this run).
The big bang’s were absorbed by a shadow priest using Dispersion but could just as well have been done by a fire mage specced for Cauterize.
Since I’m an endless optimist (not really) I’ve just geared up for Argent Defender and I’m hoping to get some attempts on that before the Cataclysm gets here. :)
